Dental Hygiene

Lake Washington Institute of Technology's Dental Hygiene program prepares students to enter the healthcare workforce as entry-level Dental Hygienists who are competent in the provision of safe, ethical and effective dental hygiene care. The program aims to provide students with high quality didactic and clinical education in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills of Dental Hygiene as well as the promotion of life-long learning.

Tuition and Fees

National Board Exam Fee $250, Washington State License fee $190, Western Regional Exam Board's fee $2100, Jurisprudence Exam fee $50.

 



Curriculum

The curriculum consists of seven quarters, including a six-week summer quarter of full-time professional and clinical education preceded by 57 credits of prerequisite courses. The prerequisite science courses must be at least ten years current upon program entry; be measured by a proficiency examination; or be waived by special petition to the Dental Hygiene Director. The dental hygiene courses must be taken successively. Any developmental coursework a student may be required to complete may increase the program length.

philosophy

Technology Dental Hygiene program believes the function of the Dental Hygienist is to provide safe and effective Dental Hygiene care to help people retain and improve their oral health for greater quality of life.  It is the philosophy of the Dental Hygiene program at LWTech to foster the acquisition of Dental Hygiene skills in a safe learning environment that supports communication, collaboration, and critical thinking, and to promote culturally sensitive, ethical, and compassionate care in the dental workplace.

This program has received accreditation status from the Commission on Dental Accreditation which allows students, upon graduation, to take the National Board Examination and the clinical licensing examination in the state where she or he plans to practice. Clinical experience is provided at the Lake Washington Institute of Technology dental clinic under the supervision of licensed dentists and licensed dental hygienists. Additional clinical experience occurs in a variety of off-campus settings located in the greater Seattle area.

 

LOCAL ANESTHETIC/NITROUS OXIDE CE

LWTech's Continuing Education Local Anesthetic/Nitrous Oxide program is designed for:

  • Recent Dental Hygiene graduates who have graduated from an accredited Dental Hygiene program, are seeking licensure in Washington State, and plan to take the Western Regional Board Exam (WREB).

  • Registered Dental Hygienists seeking to update and expand their skills, or returning to practice.

All clinical training is supervised by licensed dental hygienists and dentists who are experienced in teaching expanded functions and licensed in Washington State.

Advising and Admissions

Admission to the Dental Hygiene program is different from admission to other college programs because students are selected on a competitive basis. This program has additional application and qualification requirements with application deadlines unique to the program.

  • Pre-allied heath  drop-in advising on Mondays 12-3pm in West 207.  Drop in advising is first come first serve.  Meeting last up to 15 minutes.  Students must have a LWTECH student number in order to use pre-allied health drop in advising        
  • Specialized advising is available before applying to the Dental Hygiene program (individualized Pre-Allied Health Advising online via live chat)  Register for Pre-Allied Health Advising

Bachelor's Degree Completion

Students with an AS/AAS/AAS-T in Dental Hygiene may earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from Eastern Washington University. The classes are online and this is an innovative and new way for graduates of the Dental Hygiene program to earn a Bachelor's degree while working part or full time as clinical dental hygienists.

A minimum of 61 upper-division credits is required beyond the associate degree, and 45 of these credits must be earned from Eastern Washington University. The Eastern Washington Degree Completion Program typically takes two years; however, graduates can choose to finish it in one year.

The LWTech Dental Clinic is staffed by dental professionals including licensed dentists, dental hygienists, certified dental assistants and students serving patients oral health care needs. Our patients provide an important link to our dental team by giving the students opportunity to work on patients in a clinical setting.
